If you have seen Kashmiris, you might have noticed their long outfits covering the whole body up to the knees. Pheran or Phiran is the traditional outfit for Kashmiri males and females that help keep the body warm in the winter season. It is a loose cloak made of wool or tweed, which is loosely gathered at the sleeves without any side splits. The customary Pheran reaches out to the feet, well known up to the late nineteenth century. However, the modern version stretches out beneath the knees.

Kashmiris consider it as an integral part of their culture and identity; it is one of the very few traditional garments which has withstood the test of time and has kept pace with the changing customer tastes. These days it is clubbed with denim & palazzos and embellished with embroidery to give it a modern appeal!

During summers, people wear cotton Pheran, but later, during winters they choose woolen Pherans locally known as a ‘loch’. Female Pherans are primarily designed with vivid bloom-like Aari embroidery or thin metal strings – ‘Tilla’ work, whereas male Pheran dresses are very basic without any colorful design.

History of Pheran

The historical background of the word stays unclear. However, it has been derived from the Persian word for the shirt, ‘perahan’, the Greek word ‘cover’, or even the Tajik word ‘peraband’. According to some sources, the Pheran was introduced by Mughal ruler Akbar when he conquered the valley in 1586. Some different sources guarantee that Pheran was referenced in Sanskrit called nilamata Purana and is known as Pravarna. However, the claim is unsupported.

Kashmiris believe that it is a necessary piece of their way of life and character.
